How to install
The extension is currently in developer preview. Chrome Web Store release is coming soon — for now you can sideload the ZIP in two minutes.
- Download the ZIP below and unzip it anywhere on your machine.
- Open chrome://extensions in a new tab.
- Toggle "Developer mode" on (top-right corner).
- Click "Load unpacked" and select the unzipped extension/ folder.
- Pin "Kaomojis" from the extensions toolbar for one-click access.
How it works
- The popup calls the public Kaomojis API at kaomojis.jp/api/v1 (CORS `*`, no API key).
- Results are rendered instantly in a 2-column grid; clicking any cell copies the text.
- The background service worker handles the right-click menu so you can search kaomoji for any selected text on the page.
- All data is public-domain Japanese kaomoji text; no personal data is ever transmitted.
Powered by the Kaomojis Public API
This extension is a thin client on top of the free Kaomojis Public API (OpenAPI 3.0). You can build your own too — see /developers.

Is the extension free?
Yes, 100% free. No ads inside the popup, no sign-up, no telemetry.
When will it be on the Chrome Web Store?
Soon. We're preparing the listing (name, description, screenshots, privacy policy). For now you can sideload the ZIP in developer mode.
What permissions does it request?
contextMenus (right-click menu), clipboardWrite (copy button) and host access to kaomojis.jp/* for the API. That's it.
Does it work in Edge / Brave / Arc?
Yes — any Chromium-based browser that supports Manifest V3 can load the ZIP the same way.
Can I contribute?
Absolutely. The code lives at the kaomojis.jp repo and we welcome bug reports at [email protected].
